What counts as a dental emergency
If you're in pain, bleeding, or something has broken, call us — don't wait for a routine appointment to come up.
- Toothache that's keeping you awake or not responding to pain relief
- A knocked-out tooth (see first-aid steps here)
- A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
- A lost filling, crown or veneer
- Facial or gum swelling
- Bleeding that won't stop after an extraction
- A broken denture or a bracket causing injury
Our opening hours — and Sundays
If you leave a message on a Sunday, our reception team will call you back first thing Monday morning and we will do everything we can to see you that day. If you can't wait, contact the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne emergency service, your nearest hospital emergency department, or call 000 if you have severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or difficulty swallowing.

Knocked-out tooth — what to do right now
Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline — never scrub it. If you can, place it straight back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in milk (not water) and call us immediately. An adult tooth reimplanted quickly has a far better chance of surviving.
While you wait for your appointment
For toothache, take pain relief you'd normally take and hold a cold compress against the outside of the cheek. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food on that side. A lost filling can be temporarily protected with a pharmacy dental cement. Don't put aspirin directly onto the gum.
