What braces cost in 2026 — and how families actually pay for them

Full braces or a full clear aligner case in Melbourne's south-east generally starts from around $8,000. Limited cases treating only the front teeth can cost considerably less.

What that should cover

A complete orthodontic quote normally includes:

  • Assessment, records and treatment planning
  • Fitting the appliance
  • All routine adjustment or review appointments
  • Removal at the end of treatment
  • Retainers, which protect the result

How families pay

Private health extras with orthodontic cover typically have both an annual limit and a lifetime limit. Because treatment usually spans two or more calendar years, many families claim across multiple years.

Payment plans through Humm or AfterPay spread the balance; approval criteria and provider terms apply. Ask your practice to convert the total into a weekly or fortnightly figure — it's a far more useful number than the headline total.

Medicare CDBS does not cover orthodontic treatment.

Before you commit

Get the quote in writing, confirm retainers are included, and check whether there's a fee for replacement retainers or missed appointments.

Costs stated here are indicative. Your exact figure is confirmed after examination and a written treatment plan.
