Implant vs bridge vs denture: an honest comparison

Dental implant

Replaces the root as well as the visible tooth. It stands alone, so the healthy teeth either side are left untouched, and it helps maintain the bone in the gap.

Costs the most and takes the longest — commonly four to nine months because the bone needs time to bond to the implant.

Bridge

Faster and cheaper. A bridge spans the gap using the teeth on either side as supports, which means those teeth are cut down to hold it — even if they're perfectly healthy.

A reasonable choice when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns anyway. Less attractive when they don't.

Partial denture

The least expensive and quickest option, and removable. Many patients find it the least comfortable, and it can feel less stable when eating. It's often used as an interim step while an implant site heals.

How to choose

The right answer depends on how much bone is present, the state of the teeth either side, your general health, and your budget and timeframe.

Any practice recommending one option without discussing the other two is worth a second opinion. Ask for all three costed.
