Can dentists provide medical certificates for work or school?

Yes. Dentists are AHPRA-registered health practitioners, and a dentist can issue a medical certificate (sometimes called a carer's or absence certificate) when the absence relates to a dental condition or dental treatment.
This surprises people, but it makes sense: a dental abscess, a surgical extraction or a broken tooth are genuine medical reasons to be absent, and the practitioner treating them is the right person to certify them.
When a dental certificate applies
Typical situations include:
- Attending a dental appointment during work or school hours
- Recovery time after a surgical procedure such as wisdom tooth removal
- A dental emergency — severe pain, swelling, infection or trauma
- Caring for a child who is unwell with a dental condition or recovering from treatment
What a certificate covers — and what it doesn't
A dentist's certificate covers the dental matter and its reasonable consequences: the appointment itself, and the recovery period the treating dentist considers appropriate. It won't certify unrelated conditions — that's outside a dentist's scope of practice, the same way a GP wouldn't certify the fit of your crown.
The certificate states what the treating practitioner can attest to: that you were seen, the dates involved, and the period you're unfit for work or school. It doesn't disclose your diagnosis or treatment details beyond what's necessary.
Will your employer accept it?
In most cases, yes — a certificate from a registered dental practitioner is a legitimate medical certificate. Fair Work guidance recognises certificates from registered health practitioners as evidence for personal leave. If your workplace has questions, they can verify the practitioner's registration on the public AHPRA register.
